“Me too”: a new project to increase inclusion of people with severe disabilities

09/07/2021

How theatre can reinforce the Employability of disabled people. Our example in Turin, Italy

The project „Me too“ has started at the beginning of 2021, promoted by the Piedmont Region in the context of a Call for Special projects for people with disabilities.

It was launched by Patchanka Cooperative together with several stakeholders such as Turin Municipality, Mountain Union of the Municipalities of Chisone and Germanasca Valleys, Coldiretti Piedmont, Waldensian Diaconia, Paradigma Social Cooperative, Paideia Foundation, UGI.

The target group is made of approximately 40 people, residing throughout the metropolitan area of Turin and in the provinces of Turin, Asti and Cuneo (Piedmont). People must be unemployed and registered on the targeted placement lists with severe disabilities.

The project is composed by various activities over the course of 18 months and includes transversal tutoring, accompaniment to work, on-the-job training experiences, work experiences, theater workshops, and much more. The final goal is the social and work inclusion of people with severe disabilities.

Strengthened by the experience gained through jobAct® over the years and convinced of the effectiveness of the method, we have chosen to use theatrical techniques also in this new project with this delicate target.

Our theater trainer Virginia has started two group courses, in Turin and Villar Perosa over summer 2021. Thanks to specific exercises the participants are learning to better understand and manage their emotions, to work as a team, to achieve collective goals, to be more aware of their own role within the group.

She also implemented a narrative section that turns around these macro-questions: What are you good at? Where would you feel good working? How do you imagine the work? This section is very useful to bound personal empowerment to a professional orientation. Through exercises and simulations, participants will imagine and experiment their approach to work;  they will be able to train and understand their potential, in order to feel ready for work
